Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 6 turkey sausage patties, cooked
- 3 slices cheddar cheese, quartered
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease or line a 6-cup muffin tin.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, egg, milk, and vegetable oil.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Fill each muffin cup about halfway with batter. Place a cooked turkey sausage patty on top of the batter in each cup. Then put two cheddar cheese squares on top of each sausage patty.
- Top each muffin with the remaining batter, dividing it evenly.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the muffins cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve warm.
Notes
For a sweeter muffin, increase the maple syrup to 1/3 cup. These muffins can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. They are also freezer-friendly; wrap individually and freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in the microwave or oven until warmed through. You can substitute different types of cheese, like pepper jack or mozzarella, if desired.
