Ingredients
- 4 slices thick sourdough or artisan white bread
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- 4 slices mozzarella cheese (or 1 cup shredded)
- 2 slices provolone cheese
- 8-10 slices beef turkey turkey pepperoni
- 2 tablespoons marinara sauce, plus extra for dipping
- Fresh basil leaves (optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with the garlic powder and dried oregano until well combined.
- Spread the garlic herb butter generously on one side of each slice of bread.
- Flip the bread slices over so the buttered side is facing down. Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the unbuttered side of two slices.
- Layer a slice of provolone, followed by the beef turkey turkey pepperoni, fresh basil (if using), and finally the mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce.
- Place the remaining bread slices on top, buttered side facing out, to close the sandwiches.
- Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
- Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is completely melted.
- Remove from heat, slice diagonally, and serve immediately with extra warm marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
Using medium-low heat is crucial; it allows the heat to penetrate the bread and melt the cheese without burning the garlic butter crust. For an extra crispy bite, sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on the buttered outside before frying.
