Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup (for the bars)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- FOR THE MAPLE GLAZE:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup (for the glaze)
- 2-4 tablespoons milk (or heavy cream), as needed
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan, or line with parchment paper leaving an overhang for easy removal later.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Make sure there are no lumps.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the melted and cooled butter, large egg, 1 cup milk, 1/4 cup pure maple syrup, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until well combined.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few small lumps are okay. Overmixing can lead to tough bars.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared 9×13 inch baking pan. Use the back of the spoon or a spatula to spread it smoothly to the edges.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a wooden skewer or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The edges should be lightly golden brown.
- While the donut bars are baking, prepare the maple glaze. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, 1/4 cup pure maple syrup, and 2 tablespoons of milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, until you reach a smooth, pourable consistency. It should be thick enough to coat a spoon but thin enough to drizzle.
- Once the donut bars are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 5-10 minutes. While still warm, pour the prepared maple glaze evenly over the top, spreading it with a spatula if needed.
- Allow the glaze to set for at least 15-20 minutes at room temperature before slicing and serving. For faster setting, you can place the pan in the refrigerator for a short time. Once set, lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper overhang and cut into squares or rectangles.
Notes
For an extra cozy touch, sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg into the bar batter. Store any leftover maple glazed donut bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For a richer glaze, use heavy cream instead of milk. You can also toast some chopped pecans or walnuts and sprinkle them over the wet glaze for added texture and nutty flavor.
