This recipe is easy to follow and the result is simply irresistible.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 box (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts, softened
  • 2 tablespoons milk or cream
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Place an oven rack in the center position. Lightly grease a 10-inch iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Toss until apples are evenly coated. Dot the apple mixture with butter pieces.
  3. Unroll one pie crust and gently fit it into the bottom of the prepared iron skillet, pressing it against the sides. Trim any excess crust that overhangs the edge.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the crust-lined skillet, spreading it evenly.
  5. Unroll the second pie crust. You can either place it directly over the filling, crimping the edges to seal, or cut it into strips for a lattice top. If using a full crust, cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  6. Brush the top crust with milk or cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  7. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, tent the pie with foil.
  8. Let the pie cool in the skillet for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the filling to set slightly.

Notes

For best results, use a mix of apple varieties. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Store leftovers in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes.
